Antique Circa 1810 Georgian Swivel Ring with Carnelian Intaglio and Woven Hair Compartment
Antique Georgian 9K gold swivel seal ring with carnelian and woven hair. A smooth polished rich carnelian with a bevelled edge, set within a gold rectangular frame, is reverse carved with the name "Mary" in a simple and elegant script. The central portion of the ring swivels to reveal a compartment at the back with brown hair woven in a basketweave pattern under bevelled glass. The hair is dotted with tiny red flecks which we suspect may be a foil backing of the carnelian. The swivel compartment is held by two scalloped flanges with a concealed hinge. The delicately reeded split shank features a chain link motif as its central element. A beautiful sentimental ring. Circa 1810s. No hallmarks, but tests as 9K gold. This ring is in good vintage condition, with some subtle overall wear commensurate with age, and a small darkened solder mark at the back of the shank.
This ring is currently a US size 7 when worn with the carnelian side facing out, and a size 6 with the hair side facing out. It can be resized by your local jeweler.
