Antique 1803 Georgian Lapis Lazuli Intaglio Mourning Ring
Antique Georgian mourning ring with lapis lazuli seal. A lapis lazuli intaglio monogram is set in a rose gold bezel, supported by a beautifully reeded split shoulders with a lancet motif at the center, and a triple notch where the shoulders meet the wide shank. A most unusual enigma of a ring! The setting was originally a mourning ring dedicated to Jos. h (Josiah, Joseph, Jonah?) Davis, who died on the 13th of July, 1803, at the age of 33. The lapis intaglio, however, is most likely a later addition based on the style of the script. It's possible that the monogram intaglio was set around the turn of the century by a descendant of the original Mr. Davis, with the initials E. D. The letter D bears a striking similarity to the ichthys symbol, adding another layer of interest to the ring. No hallmarks, but tests as 15K gold. Circa 1803. This ring is in good vintage condition, with evidence of a previous resizing at the back.
This ring is currently a US size 10, but can be resized by your local jeweler.
