Antique 1794 Georgian Sepia Navette Mourning Brooch
Antique Georgian mourning brooch with sepia miniature and hair compartment. "Affection weeps, Heaven rejoices" are the words inscribed on the pedestal. On top of the pedestal sits a funerary urn. To the left, a woman weeps, and an angel rejoices with one arm raised heavenward, the skin faintly tinted with color. Also pictured in the foreground in front of the angel is an anchor, perhaps denoting that the deceased died at sea, or had some association with the sea. The whole scene is surrounded by a blue enamel and delicate crimped gold border under glass. On the back of the brooch, surrounding the compartment with woven hair is the inscription "Harry Scrase Farncombe obt 31 May 1794 Aged 49." The scene on the front and the hair compartment on the back are covered by subtly convex glass. The glass at the back moves around a bit, but is too large to fall out of the setting. No hallmarks, but tests as 9K gold. The brooch is in good vintage condition, with some natural wear commensurate with age.
The brooch measures 1 3/8" long and 3/4" wide, and the pin extends another 1/8" beyond the bottom of the pin.
