Antique 1873 Victorian Mourning Locket Brooch with Banded Agate
Antique Victorian mourning brooch in gold with banded agate, and locket reverse. A banded agate is surrounded by four lovely three-dimensional and engraved ivy leaves, ringed by the words "IN MEMORY OF" in gold on a black enamel field, each letter separated by a fine gold line. The reverse side features a locket compartment containing a black fabric under glass, and is engraved along one edge with the words "Lilian Bell ob 4.4.73 aged 74". There is a pin which functions well, and a small bale, perhaps for conversion to a pendant. The locket does not seem to open, but a jeweler might possibly be able to help you to put your own keepsake inside if you wanted to. Circa 1870s. No hallmarks but the face tests as 10K gold, and the pin tests as 14K gold. This item is in good vintage condition. There is an area of damage or imperfection to the glass, but it doesn't seem to affect the structural integrity.
The brooch measures 1 5/16" in diameter, and the locket compartment is approx. 7/8" in diameter.
