Antique Victorian Flemish Heart (Vlaams Hart) Pendant
Antique Flemish Heart diamond and silver pendant. Flemish heart pendants, a folk tradition in Belgium, and especially Antwerp, are associated with the Virgin Mary. The diamond heart at the center, surrounded by a wreath of diamond-studded roses, represents the heart of Mary. Traditionally they were given as gifts to mothers on Ascension Day, or as an offering to the church to pray for the protection of a mother and child. This particular pendant features four symbols of Eros (a torch, bow and quiver, and laurel wreath) crowning the heart. Forty tiny rose cut diamonds are set in closed, foil-backed settings. The pendant measures approx. 1 5/8" wide and 2 5/8" tall, not including the bale. The total height including the bale is 2 7/8". No chain included. Due to the irregular nature of the antique rose cuts and closed back settings, it's impossible to estimate the carat weight of the diamonds. Circa 1800's. Belgian hallmark for 800 silver, and tests as such. Some overall wear commensurate with age.
