Art Deco .23 Carat Old European Cut Diamond Solitaire Engagement Ring
Vintage Art Deco diamond solitaire ring in white gold. A sparkling old European cut diamond in platinum hexagonal, milgrain-trimmed setting is held aloft by elegantly soaring shoulders, delicately engraved with a braid motif. According to Roman accounts of the ancient Celts, it was the custom for unmarried Celtic women to wear their hair loose, while married women wore their hair in braids, as a symbol of womanhood or coming of age. This may be one possible reason for the prevalence of braided motifs on engagement rings. The profile of the open basket and shank are engraved with diagonal lines and fine milgrain. An elegant, streamlined, quintessentially Art Deco ring. The diamond is approximately .23 carats, M to N color, I2 clarity, eye clean. No hallmarks, but tests as 14K white gold. Circa 1920s. The ring is in very good vintage condition, with some wear to the profile of the basket from rubbing against a wedding band, and slight wear to the engraving at the back of the shank, all commensurate with age.
This piece is currently a US size 7 3/4, but can be resized about one full size up or down by your local jeweler.
*Antique ring box not included. For display purposes only.
